Arms crossed over his chest, Bill stood in the narrow hallway outside the police interview room. He’d been there a little over an hour, watching the interrogation in progress through a panel of glass

“Look, Young, we know what you did to that prostitute in Dallas.” Jake Ford’s voice rasped into the hallway through the speaker above the glass panel. “You stabbed her. Tried to strangle her.”

Quince Young furrowed his weather-beaten forehead. The man’s thick lips, bulldog jaw and crooked nose reminded Bill of a boxer who’d taken more than a few falls.

“Why the hell you bringin’ that up again?” Young protested. “I told you, nobody never charged me.”

“And I told you it’d be a good idea to get your facts straight,” Jake countered. “The cops did charge you. The charges were dropped when the victim failed to show up to testify against you.”

“Same difference I walked.”

Jake leaned across the small wooden table that had years of cigarette burns scarring its top. “You don’t want to talk about how you stabbed and tried to strangle that woman in Dallas, fine. Let’s go back over what you’ve been doing to the street girls in this city.”

“You think my story’s changed since you hauled me off my job this morning and dragged me into this hellhole? Some hooker stands on the street flashing her legs and blowing kisses at me when I drive past. She wants money, I want sex. We spend some time together, and everybody’s happy. End of story.”

“Is that so?”

Sneering, Young tapped his thick fingers against the tabletop. “Except you cops got to go actin’ all indignant just ’cause a man gets his lemons squeezed by a woman who’s willing to do it.”

At that instant, Whitney walked up and halted at Bill’s side. “Lemons squeezed?” she asked.

His mouth curved. “I’ve never heard consensual sex described in quite that way.”

“You’ve been out here on your feet since we started the interview,” she said, holding up a foam cup of steaming coffee. “I figured you could use this.”

He took in her pale cheeks, the green eyes shadowed by fatigue. “And you’ve been sitting in that room, interrogating Young for the same length of time. You look like you could use some caffeine yourself.”

“I had too many things on my mind last night to get much sleep.” She shrugged. “Anyway, milk’s my drink of choice these days.”

When he cocked his head, she held up a hand. “Don’t even say the word ulcer. I get enough flak on that subject from Jake. Just take the coffee.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Her soft fingers grazed his as he accepted the cup. The intimacy of the gesture drove a spike of need into his gut In the small, narrow hallway where they stood, he could smell her skin, the now-familiar fragrant scent of her perfume.

He forced a swallow of the strong, black coffee past the tightness in his throat while reminding himself they’d agreed to shelve their emotions and keep their minds on business. That had been about seventeen hours ago, and for the past sixteen he’d questioned whether he could keep that bargain.
